Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated with poetry. Rhymes, rhythm, and soul. Things as simple as One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss captivated my imagination and took me for a literary ride. I never got into real poetry until I got older and started to have more of a interest in things like Hemmingway, Walt Whitman, and Edger Allan Poe (you know the big names) I even sometimes take the time to right my own poetry or songs, find it some kind of relaxing. So you ask what poetry means to me. What comes to mind when I hear the word? Your answer: Everything. In other words, anything and everything is poetry. (Sounds crazy right?) WRONG! Poetry is inspiration, motivation, love, hate, death, life, nature, sincerity, humor, song, story, so on and so forth. It is everything in front of us that we sometimes neglect unless put into words. The blue of the sky, the shades of color in autumn, the faint song of a choir while sitting on a park bench near a church. A good poet can make words come alive, can make you feel the breeze or taste the salt of the ocean. That’s what makes it so special. Of course there are bad poems, but that’s all up to opinion. After all one mans junk is another mans treasure. As for the great poems…cheers to you! That’s what poetry mean to me.
I am so happy that someone else shares my same opinion on poetry. I felt Dr. Seuss was my first poetry experience and still use him quit often today. I really like your aspect of poetry being everything. Since my reading of poetry for this assignment I agree that poets can make words come alive.
