Somthing else I don't understand about Oedipus the King.
Who are the strophes and the antistrophe and what does it mean by Chorus when it says it in the play? I know a chorus of a song is like the substance or the "meat" of the song but I'm not sure what it means in a play. Are the men talking to Oedipus real or figments of his imagination? Are the stophes and antistrophe the same person has the chorus....these parts of this play confuse me ALOT, it threw me off and made it harder to comprehend.
If you look at the bottom of p. 1286 it explains what Strophe and antistrophe (line 162) are. It says they are the stanzaic units referring to movements, countermovements, and gestures that the Chorus performed while singing and chanting in the orchestra. The chorus is like the narrator of the play. They also sing and talk to the characters and the character talk back to them. This really confused me too. But after I read that part I was like o.k. I get it now. I also had trouble at first remembering the names of the characters at first. I had to keep looking back. The play uses a lot of different names for the same people.
ReplyDeleteThis play was very confusing to me also, until I googled some information about the play after reading it and having a headache from not understanding what I read. (LOL)I finally got some understanding and thought this play was actually very interesting. From what I gathered from the story the chorus is the elders or people of Thebes. If you have time look up the play on youtube it's very understandable.
